I am a journalist and the author of Bones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream, which the New York Times Book Review called “masterfully recounted.” Anonymous Content (Mr. Robot, Spotlight) is adapting Bones for the screen.
I'm a Bay Area native. I studied journalism at Santa Clara University and Northwestern University, before reporting and editing at newspapers across the country. I worked most recently as editor-in-chief of the alt-weeklies in Kansas City and Dallas, where stories I edited won national awards for feature writing, long-form news reporting, arts criticism, media criticism, environmental reporting, political commentary, humor writing, and drugs reporting.
My own writing has appeared in the Washington Post, Deadspin, the Village Voice, and elsewhere, and I've won industry awards for investigative reporting, sportswriting, and other work.
I live in the Washington, DC, area with my wife, two sons, and enough Magna-Tiles to build a pretty sweet doomsday bunker.
